Third Places

One of the things I would like to do is visit people in what are known as third places. These are places where conversations with other people take place. What other people? Whoever’s there. It needs to be somewhere that is open to the public and provides everyone the opportunity to participate. They’ll usually have regulars and they help determine the culture of the place, often more than the owners or the employees.

Examples can include:

  • public libraries
  • bars
  • coffee shops
  • gyms

I’m fond of all of these places but I usually don’t talk. I am missing the part that says I can become part of the conversation that occurs there. Join me as I try to fix that.
